Giving Good Compliments
Do you remember a time someone gave you something, something you didn't buy or ask for – just a token of their appreciation? A compliment, something you wanted, their word. It felt pretty good, didn't it?
I remember this one time when I was travelling, an elderly woman stopped to tell me how much she loved my smile. Just that short exchange of a few seconds made my day and I remember it fondly even now.
Research reveals getting a sincere compliment gives us the same positive boost as receiving cash. Not just for the receiver, but also, for the giver. When you go out of your way to say something nice and give thoughtful praise to another person, it amplifies your self-confidence and nourishes your self-esteem. In just few seconds and with a few words you can completely turn around someone's day.
Whether it's directed towards a stranger or a loved one, compliments are amazing. You reinforce their value in the world by making them feel seen and loved.
Your smile is contagious.
You have the best laugh.
You always know how to find the silver lining.
You bring out the best in everyone around you
.…. and so on!
These are just a few words strung together, but incredibly powerful and warm at the same time. If you're new to giving compliments or want to make it a more important part of your personality, here's a tip for you: give specific compliments.
A lot of times we hear people say, “Oh you did an amazing job”, “I love what you're wearing”, or “I like talking to you.” However good-intentioned these compliments maybe they're also not very memorable.
The best compliments are specific.
For example, you can say: “I always feel heard when talking to you. Thank You for letting me be my authentic self.” Calling out something specific shows the other person you're paying attention and it makes your words all the more powerful.
They can help you, the giver, see the world in a more positive, balanced perspective. It will let others feel that you see the best in them and most importantly, it will help you spread a bit of sunshine and joy in this world.
I, for one, am so moved by the fact that you've carved out time in your day to read this email from me. Thank you for being a part of our vibrant community – I cannot wait for us to learn and grow together.
With gratitude,
Alisha
